Jeff Gordon spending his off week from NASCAR opening a cancer center in Rwanda

LOUDON, N.H. - A lot of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers will spend their upcoming off week fishing. Others will simply have some much needed family time.

Jeff Gordon, however, is going away for a couple days ... to Africa.

Over the last couple of years, Gordon has partnered with former President Bill Clinton and other humanitarians to raise money and awareness of health issues in Rwanda. One of the initiatives was the building of a state-of-the-art cancer center, and Gordon leaves Monday to attend the ribbon cutting.

"I'm able to be a part of something that is groundbreaking in East Africa," Gordon said Friday during his press conference at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. "This is the first of its kind cancer center. When they look at the projections in a developing (area) like East Africa, cancer is on the rise there and can be very curable and treatable in many cases.

"It's just not happening. This is a big step, and I can't wait to get there to be part of this event."

Clinton will be in attendance, as well as Rwandan President Kagame, for the opening of the Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence. In recent years, Gordon has worked with the Clinton Global Initiative and Partners In Health to tackle the issue of health care in Africa. Gordon spent an off week last year on a similar trip, his first to the region.

Gordon starts eighth in Sunday's Lenox Industrial Tools 301 (1 p.m., TNT).
