Onyx Pharmaceuticals granted priority review for advanced colorectal

Pdf Thu 11:15 am by Erin Sugar

() and Bayer HealthCare said Thursday that the U.S. FDA has granted priority review designation to their new drug application for regorafenib, a drug designed to treat patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.

The application was filed at the end of April. The FDA grants priority review to medicines that treat areas where little or no adequate therapy exists.

Regorafenib is a multi-kinase inhibitor for the treatment of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, whose disease has progressed after all approved standard therapies.

The FDA will complete its review within a six month period from the receipt of the application, rather than the standard 10-month review cycle.

The submission was based on data from Bayer?s global phase III CORRECT study of regorafenib in combination with supportive care, that was conducted in North America, Europe, Israel, China, Japan and Australia.

In October of last year, Bayer announced that the phase III study met its main goal, with results of improved overall survival and progression-free survival.

In 2011, Bayer struck a development deal with Onyx, under which Onyx will receive a royalty on any future global net sales of regorafenib in oncology.

Both parties will co-promote the drug in the United States.

"We welcome the priority review of regorafenib by the FDA as it supports our efforts to make regorafenib available as early as possible to patients who have exhausted available therapies and urgently need new options," said Bayer?s head of global development and member of the executive committee, Dr. Kemal Malik.

The investigational drug is also currently being investigated in clinical trials for its potential to treat patients with various tumour types.

Bayer HealthCare is a healthcare and medical products company. Regorafenib is one of many cancer compounds in the company's development pipeline.

San Francisco-based Onyx is a global biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of therapies for cancer.

UNESCO places Nativity Church on endangered site

PARIS (AP) ? UNESCO's World Heritage committee on Thursday approved a Palestinian bid to place the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem on its list of sites of World Heritage in Danger ? a move seen by some nations as dangerously mixing politics and culture.

Palestinian spokeswoman Hanan Ashrawi said the vote was an affirmation of Palestinian sovereignty over the site that marks the place where Christians believe Jesus was born.

Israel angrily denounced the vote, with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Ilana Stein saying the decision "has turned UNESCO into a theater of the absurd."

"This is a sad day for the World Heritage Committee," she said.

The 21-member committee, meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia, voted 13-6 to include the church and pilgrimage route, located in the Israeli-controlled West Bank, on its list of sites. There were two abstentions.

The drive to get the Nativity church quickly recognized as a World Heritage site was part of the Palestinians' bid to win international recognition since attempts to establish a Palestinian state through negotiations with Israel are frozen.

The United States was among nations opposed to the Palestinian proposal of an emergency candidacy for the iconic Christian site, shortcutting what is usually an 18-month-long process to apply for World Heritage recognition. Neither the United States nor Israel was on the committee. The U.S. ambassador to UNESCO, David Killion, said the United States is "profoundly disappointed."

The church ? which drew some 2 million visitors last year and parts of which are 1,500 years old ? stands above the grotto that Christians believe was the birthplace of Jesus. The Palestinian application asks for recognition as a site of "outstanding universal value" urgently in need of attention.

The application cited lack of regular restoration of the church due to the political situation since 1967 when Israel occupied the territories, and difficulties procuring equipment because of lack of free movement imposed by Israeli forces.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization voted to admit Palestine as a full member in October. The emergency candidacy for the church clearly showed the Palestinians' intention of making the most of their position, after a failure to join the main U.N. body because Palestine is not a recognized state.

The Palestinian application to place the Church on the list showed that they plan to put forward other sites for prestigious World Heritage recognition, eventually linking various landmarks to the life of Jesus.

"The message to Israel today is that unilateral actions will not work and that Israel cannot continue challenging the world despite its powerful allies," Ashrawi said.

Killion, the U.S. ambassador, said "this body should not be politicized." His statement noted the candidacy was opposed by a UNESCO experts committee, whose conclusions are almost always heeded.

The three churches acting as custodians of the site had also been opposed. The Greek Orthodox, Armenian and Roman Catholic churches keep the site under a so-called Status Quo agreement dating to the Ottoman empire, and fear the Palestinian action will upset that delicate balance.

"The site clearly has tremendous religious and historical significance," Killion's statement said. "However, the emergency procedure used in this instance is reserved only for extreme cases."

Stein, the Israeli Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, said those who voted in favor of the Nativity candidacy "have given themselves up as pawns in the service of the Palestinians at the expense of UNESCO's professionalism and good name."

While the church needs restoration, including repair of a leaky roof, it was not seen by the experts committee as being in imminent threat of destruction ? the criteria usually reserved for the emergency procedure.

A site nominated by Israel depicting human evolution at Mount Carmel, the Nahal Me'arot/Wadi el-Mughara Caves, also was inscribed on the World Heritage list. That nomination, like all others under consideration in St. Petersburg, went through regular channels ? not the emergency route.

Astrophile: Solar cyclones hold fusion reactor clues

Astrophile is our weekly column on curious cosmic objects, from the solar system to the far reaches of the multiverse

Object: Giant plasma tornadoes
Location: Sun surface

Ten thousand gigantic tornadoes are scouring the surface of the sun. Each of these spinning magnetic storms is the size of Europe, and together they may be pumping enough energy into the solar atmosphere to heat it to millions of degrees ? a power that leads one scientist to suggest we could mimic these solar tornadoes on Earth in the quest for nuclear fusion power.

The visible surface of the sun has a white-hot temperature of more than 5000 Kelvin, but it is icy cold compared with the outer solar atmosphere, or corona. The thin plasma of the corona reaches temperatures of more than a million Kelvin ? which is strange because temperature usually falls when you move away from a source of heat.

A clue to this phenomenon came in 2008, when Sven Wedemeyer-B?hm at the University of Oslo in Norway spotted intriguing swirls on the sun. These spinning patterns appeared in images from the Swedish Solar Telescope on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands in an instrument called CRISP, which can probe the lowest level of the solar atmosphere, a fairly thin region called the chromosphere.

Plughole plasma

"At that point we didn't really understand what was behind these swirls," says Wedemeyer-B?hm. Now, as part of a team led by Robert Erd?lyi at the University of Sheffield, UK, he has used data from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and computer simulations to get a more complete picture.

The SDO can see extreme ultraviolet wavelengths that are blocked by Earth's atmosphere, allowing it to look at the part of the corona where the temperature suddenly rises. With simultaneous observations from SDO and La Palma, the team saw swirls stretching from the chromosphere up into the corona.

Simulations show that each swirl is born when convection near the surface of the sun carries some material downwards through narrow channels. Like bathwater draining through a plughole, the material rotates, creating a twisting amalgam of plasma and magnetic fields above. It looks just like a terrestrial tornado, except 1500 kilometres across with winds blowing at tens of thousands of kilometres per hour.

Tornado fusion

Crucially, at the top of each tornado more ultra-violet light is given off than elsewhere ? a sign that the plasma is being heated at that point. Erd?lyi says that energy is probably channelled in the form of magnetic disturbances called torsional Alfv?n waves, which race up the twisted field lines of the tornado to be dissipated as heat in the corona.

This is not the only way that heat can get into the corona. Energy is also carried up in little jets called spiculesMovie Camera and intermittently dumped by explosive events such as solar flares. However, the team says that tornadoes could form one of the most important heating mechanisms.

If it works on the sun, why not on Earth? "We could steal this technique from nature," says Erd?lyi. At the ITER projectMovie Camera in Cadarache, France, scientists are trying to generate power from nuclear fusion, which requires heating plasma to many millions of degrees. Erd?lyi suggests that if we can better understand coronal heating, similar processes could be used to inject heat into a reactor. Then scaled-down solar tornadoes might bring light and heat to our homes.

(AP) ? Still not pretty to watch, still just as effective.

Spain again failed to dazzle at the European Championship yet still advanced to its third straight major championship final, beating Portugal 4-2 in a penalty shootout Wednesday following a scoreless draw after extra time.

"We're playing better in defense than what the characteristics of our players would suggest," Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said. "That's what earns victories."

After earning plaudits for the eye-catching one-touch passing that helped Spain win titles at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup, this year's team is struggling to create chances. Against Portugal, the defending champions managed only one quality shot in regulation time.

It didn't matter, though, because the Spanish still came through when it mattered. Cesc Fabregas, who came on as a substitute in the second half, scored the deciding penalty after Bruno Alves hit the crossbar for Portugal moments earlier.

"I played poorly, but the team worked really hard," Fabregas said. "I had this intuition that we could advance if we went to penalties and that's what we did."

Spain will next face either Germany or Italy on Sunday in Kiev.

"Being in another final is a miracle," Fabregas said. "It's really incredible."

Cristiano Ronaldo had several chances for Portugal, but he sent three shots well over the crossbar as his team held its own for the entire match. The Real Madrid star, who came alive with three goals in his last two matches at the tournament, did not take a penalty in the shootout. He had been slated to take the fifth one, but it never got that far.

"Our players trained and were prepared for a situation like this," Portugal coach Paulo Bento said. "We didn't have much luck."

After an often dour opening 90 minutes, the match livened up in the 30 minutes of extra time.

Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta forced Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio into a superb reflex save in the 103rd minute. Iniesta ghosted into the penalty area then held his head in disbelief as Rui Patricio reacted brilliantly to get a strong hand on his shot after Jordi Alba cut the ball back toward the penalty spot.

Rui Patricio made another fine save to deny substitute Jesus Navas in the 111th.

"Both teams were stronger in defense in the first 90 minutes, but that balance was broken in extra time," Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said.

Tempers frayed at times, with Portugal center half Pepe getting a yellow card for a challenge on Xabi Alonso as they went for a high ball. Ronaldo also received some heavy challenges late in the match.

In the shootout, Xabi had the first attempt saved by Rui Patricio before Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas saved Joao Moutinho's shot. Iniesta, Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos then all scored for Spain, while Pepe and Nani answered for Portugal.

"The first one wasn't so lucky, and then we scored the rest of them," Casillas said. "Yes, we really were lucky. Everything is about luck sometimes."

Del Bosque ditched his unorthodox 4-6-0 formation for Wednesday's match and opted for a traditional striker ? but not the one many expected. Instead of Fernando Torres, it was Alvaro Negredo that got the start up front. But 10 minutes into the second half, Del Bosque replaced him with Fabregas.

Although Negredo worked hard, his lack of movement made him easy to mark. Spain improved as Fabregas made clever runs to stretch the defense and the defending champions dominated most of extra time with the substitution of Pedro Rodriguez for midfielder Xavi Hernandez late in the match.

"I think we were better in the first 90 minutes. Then in extra time we were less efficient," Bento said. "When we couldn't take advantage of our opportunities, Spain got stronger."

Rui Patricio was a big help in goal for Portugal, but much more was expected from Ronaldo. The winger had a chance, albeit a difficult one, to win the game in the 90th minute when Portugal poured forward after clearing a free kick. But Raul Meireles' pass was fractionally behind Ronaldo and, with momentum lost, he had to check his run and sent his shot high and wide.

Ronaldo briefly threatened early in the first half, whipping over a cross from the left wing that Casillas grabbed before Nani could head it in. He also sent a free kick into the wall after too easily tumbling under a challenge.

Working as a unit, Portugal started to gain the upper hand midway through the first half. Moutinho flicked the ball into the path of Ronaldo, whose wild shot flew over the net.

"Everyone helped to control Ronaldo," Del Bosque said.

Facebook draws user ire with email switcheroo

(AP) ? Facebook has changed your email address. At least that's how many felt after a quiet but vast change in the way the company displays users' contact information.

In yet another change to its website that irked users, Facebook replaced the email address you picked to display on your profile page when you signed up for the online social network and changed it to an (at)facebook.com address.

Previously, users may have had a yahoo.com or gmail.com address displayed, so that if other users wanted to contact them outside of Facebook, they could. Sending an email to a Facebook.com address will land the email in the messages section of your Facebook profile. It means keeping Facebook's already-captive audience even more captive.

The email change was first pointed out by bloggers over the weekend and publicized by media outlets Monday, leading to gripes from users, usually on their Facebook pages.

But you can reset your profile if you're bothered by the change. Facebook didn't delete the previously displayed email addresses. To revert back to your original address, click on the "about" section of your profile. Once there, look for "Contact Info" and click on the edit icon on its right hand corner. There, you can change who can see your email address and which email addresses they can see.

Sending an email to a Facebook.com email address allows users to communicate with outside email addresses via Facebook, but it's unclear how popular they have been. Popular as it has been with more than 900 million monthly users, Facebook messages and posts have not replaced email, texting and other forms of communication.

Facebook didn't say why it made the email switch, though it said in April it was "updating addresses on Facebook to make them more consistent across our site."

"Ever since the launch of Timeline, people have had the ability to control what posts they want to show or hide on their own timelines, and today we're extending that to other information they post, starting with the Facebook address," Facebook spokeswoman Jillian Stefanki said in an email late Monday.

Facebook is well known for making changes to its website that have irritated users, sometimes temporarily. Some users are still holding out switching their old profile pages to the Timeline, which lists users' life events, updates and photos in chronological order, dating back to their birth if they shared that information on Facebook. In 2006, there was a big uproar over a now-central feature of Facebook, the news feed that tells people what their friends are doing.

Forgotten star cluster now found useful in studies of Sun and hunt for Earth-like planets

Forgotten star cluster now found useful in studies of Sun and hunt for Earth-like planets

Monday, June 25, 2012

A loose group of stars that was known for over 180 years but never before studied in detail has been revealed to be an important new tool in the quest to understand the evolution of stars like the Sun, and in the search for planets like Earth. "We have discovered that a previously unappreciated open star cluster, which is a little younger than our Sun, holds great promise for use as a standard gauge in fundamental stellar astrophysics," said Jason T. Wright, an assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State University, who conceived and initiated the research.

Wright's research team's first paper on the cluster, known as Ruprecht 147 or NGC 6774, has been submitted to the Astronomical Journal for publication. Team member Jason Curtis, a graduate student in Wright's lab, led the work for this paper and will present the team's project in Barcelona, Spain, later this month at the 17th Cambridge Workshop on Cool Stars, Stellar Systems, and the Sun.

When searching for planets with an Earth-like mass and an orbit that allows liquid water to exist on the surface, astronomers often search around stars the mass of the Sun and smaller. "The Ruprecht 147 cluster is very unusual and very important astrophysically because it is close to Earth and its stars are closer to the Sun's age than those in all the other nearby clusters," Wright said. "For the first time, we now have a useful laboratory in which to search for and study bright stars that are of similar mass and also of similar age as the Sun. When we discover planets around Sun-like and lower-mass stars, we will be able to interpret how old those stars are by comparing them to the stars in this cluster."

Wright's team has shown that Ruprecht 147 is 800 to 1,000 light years from Earth, which is so close that it is bright enough to be seen with binoculars in late-summertime skies in the constellation Sagittarius. "All of the other nearby clusters astronomers study contain stars much younger than the Sun, and all of the older stars are more than 3,000 light years away. So this cluster, being both old and close, provides a unique opportunity," Wright said. Although it appears to be relatively large on the sky, the cluster can be difficult to spot because it is not very compact and it is located in the densest, brightest region between Earth and the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

To study the Ruprecht 147 cluster, which is much larger on the sky than most objects astronomers study, the Wright's team had to use some specialized, wide-field cameras -- including those on the MMT telescope in Arizona and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawaii -- in order to get its many stars within the frame of view. "Even with these wide-field cameras, we've had to build mosaics of images to cover the whole cluster and to take very quick snapshots so that we don't overexpose the brightest stars, Wright said. "Most modern telescopes weren't designed for clusters so bright and close."

When the object was first discovered in 1830 by British astronomer John Herschel, he described it as "a very large straggling space full of loose stars." He subsequently included it in the General Catalog of astronomical objects, which he compiled based on the observations of his father William Herschel. "The cluster was rediscovered in the 1960s by Jaroslav Ruprecht, which is how it got its current name, but until now no astronomers paid it any special attention, probably because many presumed it was an asterism -- a chance alignment of unrelated stars," Wright said.

Wright's team's work has proven, for the first time, that the Ruprecht 147 cluster is only a bit younger than the Sun on the astronomical time scale. The stars in Ruprecht 147 are about 2.5-billion years old, or about half the age of the Sun, and about the age the Sun was when the first multicellular life emerged on Earth.

The team's initial observations also have measured the distance to Ruprecht 147, as well as the directions and velocities of its stars to verify that they are moving together through space in three dimensions, both across the sky and in the same angle away from Earth. These observations confirm that these stars are members of a true cluster, not just a random pattern on the sky. Wright's team already has identified 100 stars as members of the cluster, and is working to find more.

Wright said that most of the work for this initial paper was done by Jason Curtis as part of his dissertation research. Curtis's work includes observations with the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) and the Keck telescope in Hawaii, the Lick Observatory in California, and the MMT Observatory in Arizona.

"This project is exciting for me as a graduate student because it gives me the opportunity to use the latest astronomy techniques and instrumentation to explore a star cluster that has never before been investigated to this extent," Curtis said. "While this project has given me training in well-established, fundamental methods of astronomy observation and analysis, it is also opening up new doors to cutting-edge astrophysics research." For further studies, Curtis is participating in observations with the Magellan telescope in Chile and NASA's orbiting Chandra X-Ray Telescope.

In addition to Wright and Curtis, other co-authors of the team's first scientific paper include Angie Wolfgang, of the University of California, Santa Cruz; John Brewer, of Yale University; and John Asher Johnson of the California Institute of Technology. The US National Science Foundation provided financial support for this research.

"Our project with this important cluster is just beginning," Wright said "Eventually, it is going to let us find and study nearby stars with a mass like the Sun's, to help in the hunt for Earth-like planets, and to test and improve the models astronomers use to understand the evolution of stars including our own Sun."

Presti: Jackson, Van Gundy rumors are 'rubbish'

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? General manager Sam Presti dismissed reports that 11-time NBA champion Phil Jackson or former New York Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy could be the next coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder, saying an extension with Scott Brooks is a top priority.

"To me, it's rubbish," Presti said Sunday when asked about an ESPN report that Jackson and Van Gundy were being considered as options if Brooks couldn't be re-signed.

Brooks led Oklahoma City to the NBA Finals last season, but his current contract runs out at the end of the month. He has overseen a steady development since taking over the Thunder early in the 2008-09 season.

After winning 23 games that first season, Brooks took Oklahoma City to the playoffs in 2010, then to the Western Conference finals in 2011 before this season's five-game loss to the Miami Heat in the finals.

Jackson is retired but has left the door open to returning in the right circumstances. Van Gundy is now a commentator for ESPN and ABC.

"Scotty is an integral part of our organization and critical to our success," Presti said. "We value him greatly and we're looking forward to having those (contract) conversations, as he said, in the coming days.

"He's been integral to our success. We wouldn't be the situation that we're in without him and his commitment to our organization and our players."

While Presti put Brooks' contract negotiations at the top of his list, it's an expansive list of issues to tackle after coming within three wins of a championship.

Sixth Man of the Year James Harden, NBA blocks leader Serge Ibaka and backup point guard Eric Maynor are eligible for contract extensions this July, although all are already signed for next season. Veteran contributors Derek Fisher and Nazr Mohammed are set to become unrestricted free agents, along with reserve Royal Ivey.

That's a lot of pieces to try and fit into a financial puzzle that already includes the high-dollar, long-term contracts of All-Stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

"We've got to be able to build a team that can win year in and year out, and those are the challenges that have to be balanced," Presti said. "We love the group we have and we're going to work tirelessly to see if we can make it work here but we understand that there are some inherent challenges and that's part of the new (collective bargaining) system."

Presti wouldn't say if the franchise was open to exceeding the salary cap and paying the league's luxury tax in order to keep the roster together.

"What I can tell you is that we're going to do everything we can to make it work. We're going to put everything toward it," Presti said.

Each of the players facing contract decisions expressed an interest in returning to the Thunder. A day earlier, Maynor openly discussed the potential that the players would need to "sacrifice" to make it work. Harden said he loved playing for Oklahoma City and suggested the possibility of a dynasty being built by the Thunder.

"Those guys obviously care a lot about the organization, they care a lot about playing here and, I think, very much about winning. But at the end of the day, those are personal decisions," Presti said.

"We're not ones to judge anyone in those respects. We're going to do what we can to try to make it work for them and to make it work for us."

Since relocating from Seattle in 2008, the Thunder have largely been able to grow with young talent playing on less expensive rookie contracts. As the team has grown older and more successful, the cost of doing business has grown.

"The challenges of that, quite frankly, are the challenges you have when you're a good team," Presti said, "and the decisions that you have to make, especially under a new system, as we try to learn that system and understand it and ultimately make some decisions about what we feel like is the best way to build a team in Oklahoma City that's capable of competing year in and year out and giving ourselves a chance to win both in the in short and long term."

(AP) ? The jailed neighborhood watch volunteer charged with killing Trayvon Martin poses no threat to the community and should be released a second time on bail, his attorney said in a court motion released Monday

George Zimmerman's attorney asked that Zimmerman be granted bond for a second time as he awaits a second-degree murder charge in the 17-year-old Martin's shooting death during a confrontation in February in a gated community in Sanford, Fla. His attorney says Zimmerman isn't a flight risk and stayed in touch with law enforcement during his initial release on bail.

A judge will consider the request at a second bond hearing Friday.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defense.

The neighborhood watch volunteer was granted a $150,000 bond last April but it was revoked earlier this month after prosecutors accused Zimmerman and his wife of misleading the court about how much money they had raised from donations to a website. Prosecutors say they had raised at least $135,000 from the website created by Zimmerman.

During the hearing, Zimmerman's wife, Shellie, testified that the couple had limited funds to use for bail since she was a fulltime nursing student and he wasn't working. Zimmerman did nothing to correct her as she testified by telephone due to safety concerns. Prosecutors say jailhouse calls between Zimmerman and his wife a few days before the hearing show the neighborhood watch volunteer instructing his wife on how to transfer funds raised by the website to her account.

Zimmerman's wife, Shellie, was later charged with making a false statement.

"Mr. Zimmerman's failure to advise the court of the existence of the donated funds at the initial bail hearing was wrong and Mr. Zimmerman accepts responsibility for his part in allowing the court to be misled as to his true financial circumstances," Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara wrote in the motion.

O'Mara also will ask Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester to reconsider his decision to make public all of Zimmerman's jailhouse calls and the statement of an unnamed witness. O'Mara said most of the calls aren't subject to the state's public records laws and the witness statement is irrelevant and could prejudice a potential jury.

Attorneys for two sets of media groups filed motions Monday arguing there was no need for the judge to reconsider his decision.

"There should be no further delay in the public's access to these public records," attorney Scott Ponce wrote in a motion for one media group that includes The Associated Press.

Texas A&M researcher finds peaches can fight obesity

A recent study by Texas AgriLife Research revealed that peaches, plums and nectarines contain compounds that can potentially combat obesity and diabetes.

Jose Cisneros-Zevallos, an associate professor and researcher at Texas A&M, has been working with stone fruit ? fruits that have a fleshy outside and a seed inside ? for five years.

Though the fruits are linked to fighting off some chronic diseases, gorging oneself on them isn?t something Cisneros?s findings would suggest ? at least not yet.

In the first stage of his research on the project, Cisneros studied cell models that resemble certain scenarios ? for instance, the cellular makeup of an obese individual.

That stage allowed Cisneros to test compounds in the stone fruit, determine their mechanisms and, ultimately, understand their effect on the body.

His preliminary findings will be presented in August to the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia.

Though Cisneros still must test his findings on animals and hold clinical trials before his research is complete, he has found in the early stages of research that stone fruit can inhibit fat accumulation and chronic inflammation, a stage of obesity in which fat cells behave abnormally and negatively affect the body?s reception of insulin.

?The diet in American society has a major role in triggering the inflammation process,? Cisneros said. ?But these stone fruits have huge potential of compounds working in different fronts.?

Though his findings do not suggest that consuming stone fruits will reverse obesity and diabetes, ?eating healthy is always good,? Cisneros said. ?Why not include some of these fruits??

It is not yet clear what amount must be consumed to fight off obesity and diabetes, but Cisneros hopes to have that information after the clinical trials.

?There is an increase in all these types of chronic diseases. We want to create awareness that there has to be some changes in the way people are eating,? Cisneros said. ?It?s nice to know and to learn that some of the fruits contain all these compounds that can help us stay healthy.?

Mark Scarmardo, owner of The Farm Patch, a fresh produce market in Bryan, said he is always trying to promote products that are healthier for his customers, an effort he says the research can only help.

?Our generation and the new generation coming up want to eat healthier and live longer and have a better lifestyle,? Scarmardo said. ?With the research promoting it, it?s right along with what you want to do.?

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $3.45?-- 18 cents below last year, and 23 cents lower than May. That's good news for commuters, road-trippers, and other folks who depend on their cars. Crude oil prices have also dropped.

Today, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is?$3.45?-- 18 cents below last year, and 23 cents lower than May. That's good news for commuters, road-trippers, and other folks who depend on gas to get from here to there.

But wait, there's more: according to the?Detroit Free Press, demand for gasoline has plummeted4.8%?in the past few days, hitting levels not seen since October. And according to our notes from Econ 101, reduced demand means reduced prices. (Note: this comes at a time when consumption in the U.S. is already declining, which has made?America a net exporter of gas and diesel.)?

And as if that weren't enough, the price of crude?oil?has dipped below $80 a barrel, which is also?something we haven't seen since October. Oil now sits 30% below its March highs, and analysts across the board are at odds over when prices will rebound, with most blaming the sluggish European economy for the drop-off. That should help keep gas prices on the retreat -- at least for a while.

Good news for travelers?

Obviously, lower gas prices are great news for drivers, including summer vacationers traveling by?car. However, those going by plane may not be so lucky: while the cost of jet fuel is related to the cost of gasoline, the two don't always move in lockstep. (For example, jet fuel prices are ever so slightly?higher now than they were last week.)?

More importantly, though,?airlines?aren't always quick to reduce fares, even when their cost of doing business drops. Which, of course, is how they make moolah.

And there's even some bad news for road-trippers, because instability in the oil market often translates into instability in the broader?financial?markets. That kind of economic uncertainty takes its toll on your savings -- meaning that you might be able to afford that drive out to Yellowstone this year, but next year? Maybe not so much.

Our advice? Take advantage of the good situation and wring as much enjoyment as possible from this summer's vacation. And send pics!
