Dog Treat Made from Bull Penis May Pose Health Risks

When dog owners toss their canine companions a bully stick to chew on, they might not be aware that the popular treat could be packed with calories and contaminated with bacteria, researchers say. And pet owners might not even know that the stick is made from an uncooked, dried bull penis.

In a small study, researchers examined a sample of 26 bully sticks, also known as pizzle sticks, manufactured in the United States and Canada. They found that the treats contained 9 to 22 calories per inch. That means the average 6-inch bully stick potentially represents 9 percent of the recommended daily calorie count for a larger 50-pound (22-kilogram) dog and 30 percent of the requirements for a smaller 10-pound (4.5-kg) dog ? a significant source of calories pet owners might not be aware of.

"With obesity in pets on the rise, it is important for pet owners to factor in not only their dog's food, but also treats and table food," researcher Lisa Freeman, a professor of nutrition at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, said in a statement.

Tests for bacteria showed that one of the treats contained Clostridium difficile, one was contaminated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and seven contained E. coli. The researchers noted that their sample was small and a more extensive study is needed to investigate the widespread contamination rate in bully sticks. But they said their results at least suggest pet owners should wash their hands after touching such treats, as they would with any raw meat.

(This isn't the first time a pet treat has been linked with contamination. Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 2010 in the journal Pediatrics that an outbreak of salmonella in 79 people between 2006 and 2008 was caused by contaminated dry pet food.)

While the source of the bully sticks is no secret, many pet owners don't seem to be aware that the treats are made from the raw penises of bulls or steers, a survey by the research team showed. A 20-question online poll completed by 852 dog owners from 44 states and six countries showed that 44 percent of respondents could correctly identify the source of bully sticks as bull penises. (Twenty-three percent said they fed their dogs the treats.) And there was even some confusion among veterinarians ? an unimpressive majority of vets (62 percent) polled by the researchers knew where bully sticks came from.

"We were surprised at the clear misconceptions pet owners and veterinarians have with pet foods and many of the popular raw animal-product based pet treats currently on the market," said Freeman in a statement. "For example, 71 percent of people feeding bully sticks to their pets stated they avoid by-products in pet foods, yet bully sticks are, for all intents and purposes, an animal by-product."

The research is detailed in this month's issue of the Canadian Veterinary Journal.

ScaleMatrix Opens Business Continuity Center | Private Cloud ...

451 Research: Analyst:?Rick Kurtzbein??Glenn Ford
27 Jan, 2013

ScaleMatrix has opened its San Diego Business Continuity Center located next to the company?s Kearny Mesa campus in the eastern suburbs of San Diego. Supported by power generators for emergency power, the 46,000-square-foot, climate-controlled business continuity center provides diverse and redundant Internet connectivity and armed security, as well as phone services. The facility features high-speed, multi-homed Internet connectivity and direct interconnection to colocated cabinets and cloud infrastructure. Amenities also include a shared kitchen space, which will have coffee service and vending machines.

Most of the larger multi-tenant datacenter (MTDC) facilities today provide temporary office space, conference rooms and kitchen areas for colocation customers. These amenities are typically offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. ScaleMatrix?s new facility, in contrast, offers secure, dedicated cubicles for $499 per month, and suites starting at $1,499 per month. The company will also provide custom suites to customers with specific space and configuration requirements. The company reported that several San Diego institutions have already secured space and that half of those clients have asked for custom suites. With an on-site construction crew, ScaleMatrix can build a custom suite within 30 days.

The value of dedicated business continuity space

The temporary office space, conference rooms and kitchen areas provided in MTDC facilities suffices if a colocation customer suffers an outage and requires time to restore systems and data. However, significant issues arise around office space utilization when a widespread disastrous event occurs that affects multiple customers in the MTDC facility or if multiple customers schedule recovery testing at the same time.

IT resources from multiple companies converge on the datacenter and vie with one another for resources to restore systems and data. It should be noted that some disasters could result in IT resources working for days to ensure all critical systems are operational and business operations have been restored. It will be during such events that an organization will most appreciate the investment in dedicated cubicles and suites for its recovery team?s uses while restoring business continuity.

Competition

San Diego has the 17th largest GDP out of the metros in North America and the city has seen steady demand for MTDC services. The economy in the city has a number of drivers, including the city?s deepwater port; hosting the world?s largest naval fleet; a shared border with Mexico, leading to important trade; tourism and the city?s growing number of technology firms providing demand for MTDC facilities, including wireless, life sciences, pharmaceutical research and health services. San Diego is located about 120 miles south of Los Angeles and 87 miles south of Orange County, so MTDC providers in the city do see some limited competition from datacenter providers in Orange County and even further north in Los Angeles. We estimate that roughly 75% of the demand for San Diego datacenter space tends to come from within a 75-100 mile radius.

We identified nine MTDC providers in San Diego during our research of the market this year with a total of 14 active datacenters. While local competition for colocation services exists from regional providers American Internet Services (AIS) and RedIT, ScaleMatrix aims to target clients on a national basis with a combination of traditional colocation services, cloud-based hosting and a growing managed service portfolio. The company sees Rackspace and Layered Technologies as its biggest cloud competitors for private cloud services.

The 451 Take

We think ScaleMatrix?s new Business Continuity Center serves a need and will be well received in the San Diego market. We are beginning to see MTDC providers in other areas adding dedicated workspace and suites for customers. The workspaces can be used to support disaster-recovery exercises (both testing and actual), break fix activities, major scheduled maintenance and many other activities. We believe that colocation customers with mission-critical systems will take a close look at ScaleMatrix?s Business Continuity Center offering.

Pentax shows NERV, flashes Japan-only Evangelion-flavored Q10s

Pentax parades Evangelionflavored Q10s

We've seen Neon Genesis Evangelion-branded devices for quite awhile now, and as a testament to the garish-hued series' longevity, Pentax has announced a special edition, show-themed Q10 series of its own. It'll release a mere 1,500 of the models in Evangelion heroine shades, starting with the Eva-01 model shown above at a price of 59,800 Yen ($660 or so). Besides showing your love for '90s anime, that sum will get you a 12.4-megapixel, mirrorless interchangeable shooter capable of Full HD video, while filling out the already-bounteous Q10 color choices from the hue-loving outfit. Stateside fans of the show will likely be disappointed though -- it'll only be sold in Japan, starting in April. Check the source to see the other colors.

Luxury cars buy into the downsizing trend

15 hrs.

For those attending the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this month, Mercedes-Benz has rolled out an all-new version of its big E-Class line-up. But for reporters who came into the Motor City early for the show?s media preview, Mercedes offered a sneak peek at the new CLA model it will formally introduce later this year.

Sharing a similar silhouette with the current CLS coupe-like sedan, the CLA will be the smallest model the German maker has ever sold in the United States, representing a significant shift not only for Mercedes but for the rest of the luxury car market.?

A quick survey of high-line manufacturers including Lincoln, Land Rover, BMW and Audi shows they?re all taking aim at downsized segments. That reflects some significant trends in the luxury market as buyers come to grips not only with rising fuel prices but increasingly crowded urban environments, analysts and industry planners suggest.

?If we want to grow and don?t want to lose our customers, we have to downsize,? contends Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of Daimler AG and chief of its Mercedes-Benz brand.

It?s not the first time the maker has pushed down-market. Mercedes made waves when it introduced its original C-Class ?Baby Benz? more than three decades ago. And in the ?90s, it tried pushing even lower with the stripped down C-Coupe. The C-Class is now one of the maker?s most popular products, though the smaller, lower-priced Coupe proved a flop and was quickly pulled from the lineup.?

Buyers were equally uninspired by the smaller, stripped-down version of the classic BMW 3-Series, the 318 Coupe.

Whether buyers will welcome even smaller models today remains to be seen, especially in the U.S. where ?it has always been bigger is better,? and buyers have measured luxury ? and the concurrent price tag ? by the inch and pound, said George Peterson, of consulting firm AutoPacific, Inc.

The C-Coupe and the BMW 318 were little more than econoboxes bearing luxury badges.? The new Mercedes CLA, however, will offer much more traditional luxury accoutrements, including leather seats, wood trim and the latest high-tech safety and infotainment systems, the maker promises.

That?s already a formula that works in Europe, said?Peterson. ?The idea that you make a statement by having the biggest car around isn?t quite the case anymore.? Now it?s more about the technology and features of the car.?

European makers have all added new downsized models, such as the BMW 1-Series and the Audi A2. The trend is apparent even in the luxury crossover segment where downsizing might once have seemed an oxymoron. BMW has had a hit with its X3 and now is offering the even smaller X1.

Slideshow: The 2013 Detroit Motor Show

Buick dealers are just taking delivery of the maker?s new Korean-made compact crossover, the Encore, which the General Motors mid-luxury brand hopes will help it attract an entirely new cohort of young, hip and increasingly affluent buyers.

Lincoln has the same idea in mind for the new MKC, one of four new models it is planning to bring out between now and 2014. The broader compact crossover segment has grown 200 percent over the past five years, including a 60?percent spurt in 2012 alone, notes Matt VanDyke, Lincoln?s new global marketing chief.?Yet while they account for a solid 11percent of the overall American automotive market, they?ve now jumped to an even more impressive 25?percent of the luxury segment.

While young, first-time buyers make up much of the market for compact CUVs and other downsized luxury products, VanDyke says it is equally significant that customers are also ?coming from other premium segment vehicles,? trading in larger, more traditional luxury products.

So, as with the CLA, the new Lincoln MKC will be offered with the sort of up-market features that normally wouldn?t be found on something nearly that small. In fact, the concept vehicle unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show featured a more lavishly appointed interior than Lincoln?s larger MKZ sedan, which made its debut late last year.

While it will help to load up these new products with plenty of luxury accoutrements, industry stylists are also working to give these downsized products more upscale designs.? Murat Gueler, who oversaw the exterior work on the MKC, and Soo Kang, who focused on the interior, put a particular focus on making the compact crossover look a lot larger than it really is.?

Particularly for the next generation of luxury customers, the idea of downsizing is not something they naturally shy away from.? If anything, they?re used to paying more for compact smartphones and tablet computers.?

And the industry is hoping that they?ll feel the same way about the latest generation of small luxury cars. The key, said analyst Peterson, will be to deliver all the features they?d traditionally expect on a bigger vehicle ?so they don?t feel like they have to sacrifice.?

W.Pa. colleges find new ways to bring classes to life | TribLIVE

By Rachel Weaver

Published: Saturday, January 26, 2013, 9:00?p.m.
Updated 11 hours ago

Washington & Jefferson students travel to another dimension to learn philosophy. Robert Morris scholars use music to study mathematical concepts. Point Park students learn how to sell out venues.

Western Pennsylvania colleges are exploring ways to make learning engaging with classes beyond the scope of traditional education. The classes often fill up fastest and are the most popular with students, educators say.

?Why should colleges have these ivory towers between disciplines when there are so many shared ideas between them?? said Heather Pinson, Robert Morris University professor of communications and media arts.

Pinson teaches a class with math professor Monica VanDieren called Math, Music and Art in which students apply theories of each discipline to study four themes: symmetry, finite and infinity, improv, and searching for truth and self.

Pinson admits the concept is complex, but students appreciate the class, for which one of their required textbooks is a graphic novel ? a novel in which the story is told with artwork, typically comic book art.

?The idea of the classroom is changing,? said Joe Douglas, 21, a senior actuarial science major from Greenville, Mercer County. ?Ten years ago, it would be someone standing there telling you the information. Now, it?s much more interactive. All classes are transitioning to that.?

During a recent class, Pinson played piano and taught students the mathematics behind chords: Each note is separated by one half-step, totaling up to 12 for an entire scale. Each student was assigned a note and, while standing in a circle, they held a piece of string to make triangles depicting each chord.

This triangle could be rotated or flipped by applying recent mathematical discoveries to the treatment of the musical notes, Pinson said. Students can maneuver points of the triangle over the diameter of the circle to create a new chord.

?You have to be able to work with others and be innovative and be problem-solvers,? she said.

Andrew Rembert, a Washington & Jefferson philosophy professor, teaches The Twilight Zone, which requires students to watch episodes of the popular 1960s television show, then delve into its themes of time travel, what it means to be human, eternal life and fear of the unknown.

Many students take it as a way to fulfill one of three required humanities courses. No matter their majors, students flock to the class. Rembert has to set aside a few slots for freshmen so that upperclassmen can?t get first bid on all the spots.

?You think outside the box and learn more in-depth concepts,? said Turner Rintala, 18, a freshman from Philadelphia.

In a recent class, Rembert delivered a lesson on nuclear weapons and the fear of their use during the time of the Cold War and Cuban Missile Crisis. A viewing of a ?Twilight? episode titled ?Third From the Sun? followed.

?It?s about what constitutes a human being,? Rembert said. ?The series was very in tune with the kinds of issues that were on people?s minds.?

Fans of Johnny Depp and history alike flock to Molly Warsh?s Global History of Pirates class at the University of Pittsburgh. The class is so popular, it will be open to 80 students in the fall, double this semester.

?It?s been super fun,? said Warsh, a history professor. ?It?s an easy sell. They all grew up with ?Pirates of the Caribbean.? ?

Students learn about much more than Depp?s Capt. Jack Sparrow. They talk about the role pirates played in the building of empires, the later struggle of merchants and their allies to eradicate piracy and how the culture persists today.

?It?s always really fun when you hear the students say, ?Holy smokes! This still exists!?? Warsh said.

In an age of rising tuition, classes that cross disciplines help educators prepare students for careers that might not even exist yet, RMU?s VanDieren said.

?They have to be able to adapt and be creative,? she said.

The average in-state tuition and fees for a full-time undergraduate at a four-year public institution in Pennsylvania was $12,079 in 2011-12, up 6.6 percent from the year before.

At Point Park, students are analyzing the workings of ticketing systems used in the sports, arts and entertainment industries in a class simply called Ticketing. They?re learning from industry veterans Jason Varnish, box office manager of Consol Energy Center, and Anthony Dennis, director of sales at the Pittsburgh Playhouse.

The class is the brainchild of several Point Park alumni, who told their former teachers how valuable such a class would be. Students go to Consol Energy Center and learn about its operation and are required to work a Playhouse event.

?You can only learn so much in the classroom,? Varnish said.

Chris Vella, 22, a senior sports, arts and entertainment management major from Oakland, said he thinks the class will give him a one-up when applying for a job.

?You get the relevant knowledge of working in the field,? he said. ?It?s something you can write on your resume.?

Logitech to phase out production of console gaming accessories ...

The third quarter of fiscal 2013 wasn't especially awesome for Logitech, despite the fact that I personally spent 30 of my own dollars on a wireless keyboard within that time frame. Whereas the same period last year saw a net profit of $55 million, Logitech posted a net loss of $194.9 million in its most recent earnings report.

As a result, some of Logitech's divisions will be scaled back, while others will be discontinued altogether. "We have initiated the process to divest our remote controls and digital video security categories, and we plan to discontinue other non-strategic products, such as speaker docks and console gaming peripherals," said Logitech president/CEO Bracken P. Darrell.

While Logitech's console peripheral business will disappear, the company's PC gaming offerings will remain unchanged. We've also been able to confirm that Logitech console accessories that have already been purchased will continue to exist, and will not crumble into piles of dust. These cost reduction measures are expected to take place "by the end of Calendar Year 2013."

Obama, Hillary Clinton to give joint interview

NEW YORK (AP) ? The White House says President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will give their first joint interview to the television news show "60 Minutes," and it will air Sunday.

Clinton is soon to leave her post as secretary of state, and already she is being mentioned as a possible presidential candidate for 2016.

Obama and Clinton competed for the Democratic nomination for president in 2008, and their relationship has been watched closely ever since.

It's not clear what questions the two will face in their joint interview.

VIDEO: Arabs Target Kever Yosef Once Again - Yeshiva World News

Over 2,500 mispallalim were on hand on Wednesday night, the eve of 13 Shevat 5773 at Kever Yosef, in PA (Palestinian Authority) occupied Shechem. The trip was organized by the ?One Shechem? organization and mispallalim were escorted by the IDF and Israel Police.

One of the mispallalim was the Rachov (?????) Rebbe Rabbi Yechiel Meir Rosenbaum Shlita, who was escorted by Shomron Regional Council head Gershon Mesika and other local officials.

Upon their arrival at the tziyun officials were in shock when they realized that once again the local Muslim population defaced the holy site in another attack intended to disgrace that which is holy to Am Yisrael. There was urine in the area of the entrance and steps as well as a flammable substance in that area and by windows, which authorities understood was the result of yet another attempted arson.

Perhaps equally appalling is the silence of Israeli state officials, who release statements of condemnation to the international media when graffiti is found on a church or mosque, but when Kever Yosef is defiled or mispallalim attacked at Kever Rochel with firebombs, rocks and explosives, they simply cannot find the words in their lexicon to speak out.

New Android apps worth downloading: Yelo: Cheap Calls Worldwide, Talking Angela, Temple Run 2

Today?s fresh apps start with Yelo, a voice over Internet app that?s great for making cheap international calls. Following that is the novelty pet app Talking Angela, a digital friend who knows how to communicate. Finally, we?ve got Temple Run 2, the follow-up to the super-popular endless runner that runs laps around its predecessor.

What?s it about? As the name suggests, Yelo is a voice-over-Internet app great for making international phone calls without breaking the bank.

What?s cool? You buy credits and make calls over your cellular data or a Wi-Fi connection to other phones. It?s basically for combatting the high rates of international calls, and perfect for making calls when you?re traveling to avoid high roaming fees. The app also lets you tap into your device?s internal contacts list, so making calls is quick and easy.

Who?s it for? Travelers and anyone who might want to make international calls should check out Yelo as an option.

What?s it like? You can get more VoIP capabilities with Viber and Skype.

What?s it about? The latest of developer Outfit7?s talking creature apps lets users chat with anthropomorphic cat ?Angela? in Paris.

What?s cool? The ?Talking? apps are pretty simple, and yet highly popular and comical. Talking Angela presents users with an on-screen feline that answers certain questions you can ask her using your device?s microphone or keyboard. Angela is also something of a virtual pet, so you can give her gifts, pet her to make her happy, and jab her to make her upset. Angela even responds when you smile or stick out your tongue.

Who?s it for? Talking Angela will mostly appeal to kids, but anyone who likes a novelty electronic pet should give it a look.

What?s it like? Outfit7 also offers Talking Tom Cat, the male version of Talking Angela, and Talking Ginger.

What?s it about? The free sequel to the super-popular 3-D endless running title is finally on Android.

What?s cool? Temple Run 2 does a great job of tweaking the formula Temple Run fans know and love, creating a game that feels fresh and challenging without being radically different. Just as last time around, players control their adventurer from a behind-the-back perspective and are charged with jumping over, sliding under, or slipping past obstacles. The game takes place on a mountaintop littered with ruins. The game looks great and there are new elements in play to trip you up and kill you ? not the least of which are visual cues like beautiful vistas that you don?t realize are actually deadly cliffs until it?s too late. New power-ups and objectives have been added, and there?s a new power system that lets players charge up some protection against obstacles as they grab coins.

Who?s it for? If you like runners at all (and obviously if you?re a Temple Run fan), this is a great one.

What?s it like? Check out the original Temple Run, as well as Temple Run Brave, the tie-in title with the Disney movie Brave.

AT&T to buy $1.9 billion worth of 700MHz spectrum from Verizon

Verizon has made a number of deals with smaller carriers lately to unload its 700MHz spectrum, and it's now struck a deal with a big one. AT&T announced today that it's buying a large swath of spectrum in the 700 MHz B band from Verizon for $1.9 billion in cash and AWS spectrum licenses. That spectrum covers some 42 million people across 18 states, including some areas that aren't currently covered by AT&T. Expectedly, the switchover won't happen overnight -- AT&T expects the deal to close sometime in the second half of 2013, assuming it gains the necessary regulatory approval. You can find the full list of states covered by the spectrum in the press release after the break.

AT&T Agrees to Acquire 700 MHz Spectrum from Verizon Wireless

Dallas, Texas, January 25, 2013

AT&T* announced in an 8-K filing today that it has agreed to acquire spectrum in the 700 MHz B band from Verizon Wireless for $1.9 billion in cash and Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum licenses in several markets, including Phoenix, Ariz., Los Angeles and Fresno, Calif. and Portland, Ore.

The 700 MHz licenses to be acquired by AT&T cover 42 million people in 18 states - California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming.

This acquisition complements AT&T's existing holdings in the 700 MHz B band and will allow AT&T to continue to quickly deploy 4G LTE services to meet demand for mobile Internet services on a wide array of smartphones, tablets and other devices. The company announced in November 2012 that it plans to reach 300 million people in the U.S. with its 4G LTE network by the end of 2014.

In conjunction with this transaction, AT&T will sell to Grain Management a single AWS license and will lease 700 MHz spectrum from Grain Management in three markets.

The transaction is subject to regulatory approval. AT&T anticipates closing the transaction in the second half of 2013.

Health & Fitness the Best Buy Way

My thoughts on exercise are similar to those of Neil Armstrong, ?I believe that every human has a finite amount of heartbeats. I don?t intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.?? But, I also want to dazzle in a formal (or, at least, not have people running away screaming) ? so, like most Americans, every January, I resolve to begin exercising in earnest.? From Jillian Michael?s grueling 30 Day Shred to the old-fashioned one-mile walk on our nearby W&OD Trail, I?ve tried a number of workout regimens.?? But, after an exhausting day of chasing a four-year old, I quickly lose motivation, as the days fly by.

So, this year, I set more achievable goals, found an accountability partner, and am dusting off my pedometer.? Best Buy also understands how difficult it is to build a fitness routine into your already hectic schedule, and is offering a discount on their Health and Fitness items.? Here are a few that caught my eye!

Fitbit Smart Scale

Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale, White ? $129.99
For me, there?s nothing that bolsters my resolve to exercise, as much as seeing those painful, little numbers on my scale.? And, this scale found at Best Buy, is a scale on steroids: it calculates weight, body mass, and body fat; uploads your track-able fitness data to an iPhone app; and holds up to 8 personal profiles.? I love that it not only gives you the cold, hard facts of your weight; but, it also provides ways for you to get to your optimal size (by syncing your data with the Fitbit website to easily monitor your workout progress and utilize other online tools).? It acts as your personal trainer, and is much more affordable!

Nike+ SportWatch

Nike+ SportWatch GPS ? $149.99
One of my friends has this nifty little pedometer/GPS system, and I admit to having a little materialistic envy every time I see it!? A Best Buy exclusive, this Nike+ SportWatch tracks your time, distance, pace, heart rate and the number of calories you?ve burned to help ensure a thorough workout, and the built-in GPS is powered by TomTom to deliver accurate readings indoors and outdoors.? It?s definitely a great motivator for joggers.

Hamilton Beach Blender

Hamilton Beach 14 oz Single Serve Blender ? $19.99
Since diet plays just as important a role as exercise in keeping you healthy, a blender would be a great investment!? During the summer, I freeze many quarts of organic fruits, so we can have inexpensive fruit smoothies during the winter months.? This particular blender appealed to me, because it?s the perfect size to make snack-sized smoothies for our family.? What better way to get your vitamins than a yummy smoothie!? I?ve even been known to add vitamin C/calcium tablets or omega 3 oils to our smoothies, and my daughter has never been able to tell the difference! :)

And, to help you on your fitness journey, Best Buy is offering you two coupons: 20% off Health and Fitness Products and 20% off Small Kitchen Appliances.? Offers are valid in-store only, and some exclusions apply.

{Disclosure: The reviewer has been compensated in the form of a Best Buy Gift Card and/or received the product/service at a reduced price or for free.}

Brain of ampelosaur from Cuenca (Spain) revealed

Jan. 23, 2013 ? Scientists have made a 3D reconstruction of the remains of ampelosaur, found in 2007 in the site of Lo Hueco (Cuenca). The fossils are about 70 million years old (Late Cretaceous).

Up to now, only one species of the genus was known, Ampelosaurus atacis, which was discovered in France. The differences between the Spanish and the French fossils do not rule out that they could represent distinct species.

The researcher from the National Museum of Natural Sciences (CSIC) Fabien Knoll, who has conducted the investigation, considers that "more fossils are necessary to establish that we are dealing with a new species." For this reason, the team has identified the specimen as Ampelosaurus sp., which leaves open its specific identity.

Little evolved brain

The ampelosaur pertains to the sauropod group, large-sized dinosaurs that settled widely during the Mesozoic Era (which began 253 million years ago and ended 66 million years ago). More precisely, it is a titanosaur, a group of plant eating animals that were dominant during the last half of the Cretaceous (last period of the Mesozoic). The first sauropods appeared about 160 million years earlier than the ampelosaur.

However, despite being the product of a long evolution, the brain of the ampelosaur does not show any notable development. Knoll explains: "This saurian may have reached 15 m in length; nonetheless its brain was not in excess of 8 cm." According to the CSIC researcher: "Increase in brain size was not favored in the course of sauropod evolution."

Another of the characteristics yielded by the reconstruction of the Cuenca ampelosaur brain is the small size of the inner ear. According to Knoll: "This may suggest that the ampelosaur would not have been adapted to quickly move either its eyes or its head and neck."

In January of 2012, Knoll conducted the investigation that led to the reconstruction of another sauropod, Spinophorosaurus nigeriensis. The simulation in 3D of its brain revealed that that species, in contrast to what the study of the ampelosaur braincase demonstrated, presented a fairly well-developed inner ear.

According to the one of the researchers, "It is quite enigmatic that sauropods show such a diverse inner ear morphology whereas they have a very homogenous body shape; more investigation is definitely required."

Why Immigrants Should Have Access to Legal Counsel ...

shutterstock_80852026U. S. immigration laws are incredibly complex, yet they provide only minimal due process protections for even the most vulnerable noncitizens. In criminal courts, defendants who cannot afford an attorney are provided one for free, but in immigration court, noncitizens do not receive the same protections. As a result, many immigrants facing deportation are forced to proceed on their own. Even noncitizens with serious mental disorders who cannot understand what is happening in court may be deported without ever speaking to an attorney. Although current laws and regulations provide some protections for people in immigration court who lack ?mental competency,? they are insufficient and unclear.? An immigration system that takes seriously the promise of due process and fair hearings must do better.

In criminal courts, defendants who cannot afford an attorney are provided one for free, but in immigration court, noncitizens do not receive the same protections.

Fortunately, efforts are underway to make improvements.? The ACLU of Southern California and its partners brought a class action lawsuit, Franco v. Holder, on behalf of detained, unrepresented individuals with serious mental disorders. In preliminary rulings, the court has held that the government must provide legal representation to plaintiffs named in the lawsuit.? However, even if this preliminary ruling becomes permanent and results in the provision of counsel for an entire class of noncitizens, the lawsuit only covers individuals in California, Arizona and Washington; since it would not be binding upon courts in other states, other noncitizens with similar disorders could continue to face deportation without access to legal assistance.

At the urging of advocates, in 2011, the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) for the first time outlined a framework for immigration judges to follow when presiding over cases involving individuals with mental competency issues. The BIA?s decision provides guidance on how to assess whether an individual is competent.? It also describes safeguards that an immigration judge may employ when a person is unable to understand or participate in the hearing. The Immigration Judge Benchbook provides further guidance ? suggesting that, in some cases, judges may terminate the case altogether when a noncitizen cannot participate in his or her hearing. While this guidance is a step in the right direction, it does not go far enough.

Last week, the American Immigration Council, in collaboration with the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Texas Appleseed, the ACLU Immigrants? Rights Project, the ACLU of Southern California, and other groups involved in the Franco litigation, submitted a brief to the BIA arguing that noncitizens with serious mental disorders cannot receive fair hearings without legal representation, and that they must be provided with representation from the outset of proceedings. In the case, a man with a serious mental disorder faced deportation but was unable to understand what was happening in his case, even after multiple court hearings. As a result, after other efforts to find counsel for him failed, the immigration judge ordered the Department of Homeland Security ? the agency detaining him and prosecuting his case ? to help the man find an attorney or other representative who could speak on his behalf. DHS refused to do so and, in fact, argued that immigration laws barred the judge from requiring the government to do so. The case speaks not only to the insufficient protections provided by current law ? but also to the confusion even within the government about what the law permits or requires.

Immigration courts continue to fail to ensure fair hearings for noncitizens facing removal, and the lack of due process is especially profound in the case of vulnerable groups, including individuals with serious mental disorders. Addressing the rights and needs of these noncitizens on a case-by-case basis cannot guarantee sufficient protection will be provided in all cases. The immigration laws should be amended to ensure that all immigrants with serious mental disorders are provided attorneys if they are unable to afford representation. No court system should ask people who are unable to understand what is taking place in a hearing to present their case against deportation without legal assistance.

Ten Elements of a Nonprofit's Business Model ? The Good Counsel

YAegGCLhvo0aJugTGHimYcWBFvZBeakoqI8_Avwh8p8-1?A posting by James V. Toscano

What are the various elements of a nonprofit?s business model? What business model?

Most nonprofits don?t think about business models. If we ask, we hear about Mission and Vision, perhaps the elevator speech. And, maybe, that?s one of the problems.

Now, we need to start thinking about business models, especially if we wish to have the resources we need to do our jobs well.

We need to stretch, to find alternative revenue sources to join our diminishing traditional sources, to become more efficient, more ?business-like.? Analysis of our implicit or explicit business model is in order.

I distinguish between a business model and ?business.? One is useful; the other is an array of practices and people, which are sometimes remarkable in getting things done and others which are utterly dreadful.

Often, we in the nonprofit sector are urged to be more ?business-like,? and we grit our teeth and want to talk about Enron, Madoff and other classic failures of the business world.

Yet, we need to capture the essential elements, the dynamic processes and methods of what we need to know to progress our institutions. And a business model is one place to start.

There?s an abundance of such information available. I like the outline developed by the Business Model Foundry and have used their complimentary online outline as a rough guide to my ideas of essential elements of a nonprofit business model, an important step in analysis and preparation of a plan, strategic or otherwise, to lead us out of this valley of resource despair. This is an examples of the excellent work of the Business Model Foundry.

Ten Elements

Analyze the nonprofit using the following elements for the first descriptive and analytic step in a process to ensure a successful future for the organization:

1. Unique expertise. Does the organization have something? intellectual property, ?a process, an insight, a tool? that no one else has? What makes it special?? How is it used?? Are results from this significant? Can it be scaled upward? Can it be legally protected through copyright or patent? As we sometimes say, ?Can it be bottled?? ?Can we license it, sell it, up-scale it or launch another business around it?

2.???? Value proposition. What do we do better than any other group? What is it that our constituencies feel they get from us that is better than others? ?What is our strategy in pleasing our customers, clients, donors and others? What value do we deliver?

3.???? Constituencies. What, where are our markets? Who are our constituencies? What are their value systems? Are they all similar, or must we segment them into various groups of customers, clients, donors, other supporters, and publics? How can we grow each segment??

4.???? Services, products. ?What are our services? Our products? Would our constituencies agree? Are there intervening ones? Unanticipated ones? How do we deliver them? Are there other ways to deliver what we produce to constituencies??

5.???? Stewardship. ?How strong are our relationships with our constituencies? Do they feel we respect and cherish their business, their interactions, their donations with/to us? What are our retention rates? How do we maintain these relationships? What systematic stewardship programs are ongoing? Do we continuously measure these? How do we deepen and strengthen these relationships?

6.???? Key players. One in ten persons are opinion leaders: do we have our fair share of those positively related to us? Is our board representative of the key players in the community representing the various elements of our constituencies? Are our executives part of community leadership? Are we a key player in our area of work? If not, how can we achieve that status?

7.???? Collaborations. Are we, or are we aligned, with the market leaders and the market makers in our field? Are we affiliated with other supplementary or complementary groups? Are our relationships the basis for increased market share and resources?

8.???? Growth potential. What is our potential for additional growth? What key resources and/or unique activities do we have that can be expanded? Do we have potential for for-profit subsidiaries? What risks are we willing to undertake?

9.???? Cost structure. How we be more efficient? Beyond all of those already mentioned, can we measure our results, then improve them? May we learn from others? Are our principal expenses in line with others? Are they defensible? Can they be maintained in face of the necessity to continuously reduce overhead costs for more effective and efficient operations?

10.? Increased revenue. Are we maximizing our markets? Are there new markets? Are we retaining customers, clients, donors? Is expansion to new markets? geographic, ethnic, SES? viable? Do we need to do new things? Following up on the previous nine elements, what can we do to increase resources, revenues for significant benefit to society?

Baseline

What emerges is the substantial baseline we need to plan our future direction, the areas we seek to improve, those we will expand, those we may decide to drop, the new markets we need for resources, and a whole range of other elements necessary for significant success in the future.

There is no guarantee that any single nonprofit organization will survive. As the number of organizations continues to grow, and traditional sources of revenue plateau, if not decline, we will be faced with very difficult choices. The business plan analysis is the first step in the making of these choices in a way that is advantaged, intelligent, and, hopefully, predictive. The time is now to begin this process.

Making Network Marketing Work Best For You | Jim McGilvary's ...

Mistakes Are Costing You! Learn To Stop?Making ALL 189 Of Them!

Struggling With WordPress? 100+ Step-By-Step Videos Now Available!

Posted by Administrator on Jan 22, 2013 in Uncategorized | Comments Off

Knowledge is an important tool. This article?s advice could give you a good start; you should make use of as much of it as you can.

Avoid wasting your time. The internet is full of distractions that can pull you away from the task at hand. Set up a schedule for your work, and focus on meeting your deadlines.

The first thing to do when deciding on a multilevel marketing business is to consider the total package of compensation offered by the partner of interest. If you know the exact amount you?ll receive you?ll be better equipped to calculate whether the time you?re committing is worth it.

Drive as much traffic as possible to your own network marketing websites by using video marketing. For just the expense of hosting, you can create a marketing campaign that is rich in content by creating a video.

It is crucial that you have a good understand of the products you are selling. If you are lacking knowledge and passion for what you?re doing, you can?t possibly expect others to be enthusiastic about it. This is very important when it comes to network marketing; you need to be happy about everything you do in work.

Do not take any shortcuts when using a multilevel marketing approach, since this can hurt you in the long run. You may be tempted to cut corners, but the only path to a successful marketing campaign is by putting in the time and effort. When quality exists, results will come.

TIP! Work on building an email database for current and future use when building a network marketing business. Consider purchasing some leads to get started, then supplement those lists with opt-ins from your site.

Be sure that you have a friendly message on your answering machine that is professional as this is the first experience your customer possibly has with you. A message that will leave a good first impression is concise, germane, instructive, and upbeat. Simply ask for them to leave a name, number, and message if necessary.

It is completely natural for people to like talking about themselves and what they want. Use this to your advantage while encouraging your customers to talk about their own lives. While they are talking, refrain from talking about yourself very much. Let them know that they can have trust in you, but allow them to do the most talking.

By joining online forums you can participate and learn a lot of information from others. These types of forums are excellent ways to meet new people, and gain new knowledge on MLM. Use your favorite search engine to identify a forum you like. Bookmark it and visit it daily when you have spare moments so you can pick up advice from industry colleagues.

TIP! If you want to be a serious network marketer, you eventually need your own website. Social media marketing can help you get started.

Deal with network marketing as you would with any business. Failure is, unfortunately, a common occurrence. Although multilevel marketing takes a great deal of work, with enough effort, it could be your full-time job. Research it and get the best training prior to starting!

Spend a lot of your time finding leads. Leads are really the only way that you will make any money. Everything else you do, such as checking emails, going to interviews, and taking opportunity calls, are all irrelevant in making money. The money comes solely from finding your leads and getting them converted into sales.

When selecting a network marketing organization to work with, chose a company that stocks products that you personally are passionate about. Your passion for the products will rub off on your customers, and in turn, your customers will be more interested in the products as well.

TIP! The goal of network marketing is to increase your organization of business partners by utilizing individuals already within your own firm. Creating a solid team of marketers is a great way to get the word out about your company.

Get some people to come to your website! It might be hard to do, but this has the ability to make or break your business. After someone has visited your site, he or she has a better idea of what products you are trying to sell.

When talking with a network marketing lead, you should never shake your head. Always nod your head and remain positive. Your entire body needs to portray positivity. )

Staying open minded will really help you when it comes to multilevel marketing. If you?re open to all opportunities, you?ll be far more successful in your business.

TIP! To become a leader in network marketing, it is imperative to demonstrate a desire to lead others to success. When you feel secure enough in your business to start helping customers and other marketers, your profits will start to rise.

With the information that you?ve just read, your business can only improve. Remember that your goal is to generate more sales. Incorporate the knowledge you have gained through this article, and watch the success of your multilevel marketing efforts grow.

Leading Online Marketing Ideas To Expand Your Business - Self ...

Posted by Sawyer Lunthmoreland on Jan 19, 2013 in Internet Marketing |

Internet marketing is the promotion of products over the internet. It easily brings together the creative aspects of the internet with the technical. This will bring a rise in sales to companies that put time into it. You will be reading many tips that will help you develop internet marketing for your company.

To create a quality newsletter, you need to write educational content. Your goal is to provide interesting information to your audience. Mention your products into your educational content, write informative texts about the products themselves, or explain how your product can have an educational use. Remember that people subscribed to your newsletter to learn something.

An important tip regarding Internet marketing is that if want to expand globally, you need to think globally. This is important because in order to best cater to people from other countries, you may wish to consider making changes to your site if it contains cultural sensitivities or humor intended solely for Americans.

It?s important that if you?re linking on someone else?s site for internet marketing that you make sure your link is a ?do-follow? link. You can click the page source of any link and look at the HTML. Unless it specifically says something to extent of ?do not follow," you know you?re safe here. Always be sure to check this.

Use forums to gain readers. Posting a teaser paragraph in several different forums can get people?s attention very quickly. The best way to do this is to find the forums that your target audiences frequent the most, and post it there. Make sure the paragraph is enticing and entertaining to gain the most.

Whether you?re allowing comments on your blog or website, you?re always going to run across a few jerks when running a business. Make sure you never reply to the buffoons of the world. Simply delete their comments and get on with your day. Do not appear childish by engaging in a back-and-forth with idiots.

When starting an online business, find a niche and become the authority on that product. For example, instead of selling shoes, sell extra wide shoes for men. While you narrow your playing field, you bring in traffic that has difficulty finding your product through other avenues, increasing your chances of making a sale. In addition, your business will be easier to find online because of your detailed key phrases. Try entering a search for ?shoes" and then enter a search for ?men?s extra wide shoes" and see what a difference a niche can make.

Internet marketing is often seen through banner ads, but these are not highly recommended. Do not invest much of your resources in banner ads if you want to successfully market your products or services online. Banner ads are increasingly being blocked with extensions in browsers, effectively deleting your ads from sites.

Creating a site map is very helpful for both search engines and visitors. It will help to find all of your pages, especially if you have a larger site. There are free tools that will help you create XML sitemaps, which are used by the major search engines to index webpages accurately.

Keeping yourself motivated is an important part of internet marketing and it is hard to keep your enthusiasm up if you keep jumping from project to project. Try sticking with just one project and stay with it until you see positive results. It may take some discipline, but it will be worth the effort.

When you concentrate on improving your internet marketing efforts, you are making excellent use of your valuable time. The marketplace accessible online is the largest in the world, and the potential customer base is incredibly vast. Reading articles like this one can pay off in a big way when you pick up useful new internet marketing tips.

Check out this additional training on Finding Profits Through Successful Internet Marketing Ideas. While you?re at it check out the many other resources that discuss Internet Marketing Strategies That Are Sure To Help Your Business Grow.

Te'o provides answers, but more may be asked | The Score

NEW YORK (AP) Manti Te'o tried to put one of the strangest sports stories in memory behind him, insisting he was the target of an elaborate online hoax in which he fell for a fake woman created by pranksters, then admitting his own lies made the bizarre ordeal worse.

Whether his off-camera interview with ESPN was enough to demonstrate that the Notre Dame star linebacker was a victim in the scheme instead of a participant is still an open question.

The most important judges of the All-American and Heisman Trophy finalist may be pro football teams. Te'o has finished his coursework at Notre Dame and is preparing for the NFL draft at an elite training facility in Florida, where the 2 1/2-hour interview was conducted late Friday night.

ESPN reporter Jeremy Schaap said that the 21-year-old Te'o answered all his questions in a calm voice, and tried to clear up the mysteries and inconsistencies of the case.

Among the highlights:

- Te'o denied being in on the hoax. ``No. Never,'' he said. ``I wasn't faking it. I wasn't part of this.''

- Te'o provided a timeline and details of his relationship with Lennay Kekua, his virtual sweetheart, who went through an array of medical calamities before ``dying'' of leukemia in September, just hours after Te'o got real news of his grandmother's death.

- He acknowledged that he lied to his father about meeting Kekua in person, then exacerbated the situation after her supposed death when he ``tailored'' his comments to reporters to make it sound as if their relationship was more than just phone calls and electronic messages.

``I even knew, that it was crazy that I was with somebody that I didn't meet, and that alone - people find out that this girl who died, I was so invested in, I didn't meet her, as well,'' Te'o said. ``So I kind of tailored my stories to have people think that, yeah, he met her before she passed away, so that people wouldn't think that I was some crazy dude.''

In the same part of the conversation, Te'o said: ``Out of this whole thing, that is my biggest regret. And that is the biggest, I think, that's from my point of view, that is a mistake I made.''

- He detailed the confusing phone conversation he had on Dec. 6, when the woman who was posing as Kekua contacted him and told him one last hard-to-believe story about how she had to fake her own death to evade drug dealers. Te'o said it left him piecing together what exactly was going on over the next few days, when he was bouncing from interview to interview while taking part in the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York on Dec. 8 and another awards dinner in Los Angeles the next night. He mentioned his girlfriend in interviews at least three times over that period.

- Even after he went to his parents, coaches and Notre Dame officials with the story by Dec. 26, and the school provided an investigation that it says corroborated Te'o's version by Jan. 4, the player told ESPN that it was not until Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, a 22-year-old acquaintance who lives in California, contacted him Wednesday and confessed to the prank, that he finally believed Lennay Kekua was not real. Schaap said that Te'o showed him direct messages from Twitter in which Tuiasosopo admitted to masterminding the hoax and apologized.

Schaap remarked to Te'o earlier in the interview that he still talked about Lennay as if she existed.

``Well, in my mind I still don't have answers,'' Te'o replied. ``I'm still wondering what's going on, what happened.''

Tuiasosopo has not spoken publicly since Deadspin.com broke the news of the hoax on Wednesday and identified him as being heavily involved. He and his family have declined several requests for comment by The Associated Press.

Whether Tuiasosopo ultimately confirms Te'o's version of the story will go a long way toward determining where this saga is headed.

In the interview with ESPN, Te'o implied that he was not holding a grudge against Tuiasosopo.

``I hope he learns,'' Te'o said. ``I hope he understands what he's done. I don't wish an ill thing to somebody. I just hope he learns. I think embarrassment is big enough.''

Te'o was the emotional leader and best player on a Notre Dame team that went from unranked to playing for the program's first national championship since 1988. And Te'o's tale of inspired play while dealing with a double-dose of tragedy became the theme of the Irish's unexpected rise and undefeated regular season.

Not until Te'o and the Irish faced Alabama in the BCS championship did the good times end. The Crimson Tide won in a 42-14 rout, the hoax was then exposed and suddenly the dream season was tarnished.

So far no law enforcement agencies have indicated they are pursuing a criminal case in the scam, and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick in a news conference earlier this week said the university was going to leave it up to Te'o and his family to pursue legal action. Were Te'o to pursue a lawsuit, it could expose him to answering more questions about this mess.

Swarbrick said it didn't seem as if laws were broken or NCAA rules violated. The Notre Dame athletic director had publicly encouraged Te'o to give his side of the story, and said his admiration for him had not changed.

While fans and the members of the media might not be satisfied with where Te'o has left it, he won't necessarily be compelled to answer to them - just to potential employers starting in February.

At the NFL combine, Te'o will have his physical skills and fitness tested, and he will be interviewed by NFL executives and coaches. He has been projected as a potential first-round draft pick. If his involvement in this hoax sets off red flags for teams and it causes him to slip in April's draft, it could cost him millions of dollars.

Said former Dallas Cowboys general manager and NFL draft consultant Gil Brandt: ``Between now and 97 days from now when the draft comes, there'll be a lot of people investigating just what took place.''
